With its 255 years of tradition, Semmelweis University is the leading higher education institution in Hungary and the Central and Eastern European region, as well as the largest medical and health sciences institute in the European Union. 

The university offers academic programs in three languages, English, German, and Hungarian. A third of its almost 16,000 students come from 129 countries, making Semmelweis one of the most international universities in the world.

Semmelweis University is a top performer in international rankings. It is 271st in Times Higher Education’s 2025 World University Rankings, up 28 places from the previous year. In ShanghaiRanking’s 2024 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, the institution is in the top 100 in Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences and remains in the top 200 in Clinical Medicine. Semmelweis University is listed in 31st position in Cardiac and Cardiovascular Systems in the U.S. News 2024-2025 Best Global Universities Rankings.

In the 2024/25 academic year, the university introduced its Curriculum 2.0, which offers an even more practice-oriented education. This improved curriculum ensures that studentsreceive high-level theoretical knowledge and hands-on training. 

In addition to its academic and research activities, Semmelweis University is also Hungary’s largest healthcare provider: Its clinics and institutes treat more than two and a half million cases a year. Its more than forty departments, which cover almost the entire spectrum of care, are located in several clinical blocks and provide care for around 10 percent of patients in Hungary.
